Poem #1
A framed copy of this poem
hangs on the wall of the Reno
Peace Center, where parents
and children affected by domestic
violence and other challenging
situations meet for supervised
visits. Devin, our son, was
adopted out of such a family
when he was 4 years old in 2001.
If
You Can Love a Child,
You Can Heal the World
By Michelle Nichols, in honor
of Devin John Nichols
If you can love a child,
You can heal that child.
If you can heal a child,
You can heal a family.
If you can heal a family,
You can heal a nation.
If you can heal a nation,
You can heal the world.
But first,
You must love a child.

Poem #2
A friend of mine who teaches
at a Title 1 school, where 98.5%
of the students receive free
breakfast and lunch, saw the
poem above and asked if I'd
modify it to encourage other
teachers. I am happy to do so!
If
You Can Teach a Child,
You Can Change the World
By Michelle Nichols
If you can teach a child,
You can change that child.
If you can change a child,
You can change a family.
If you can change a family,
You can change a nation.
If you can change a nation,
You can change the world.
But first,
You must teach a child.
